ABTA | | The Association of British Travel Agents. |

APEX | | Advance Purchase Excursion (fare). These are usually the cheapest tickets the passenger can get though they are restricted in number. |

Airport Code | | The three digit code which is unique to a specific airport. eg. LHR for Heathrow or LGW for Gatwick. |

Aileron | | A control surface located on the trailing edge of each wing tip. Deflection of these surfaces controls the roll or bank angle of the aircraft. |

Airfoil | | Any surface such as an airplane wing, aileron, or rudder designed to obtain a useful reaction from the air moving past it. |

Airworthiness | | A term used to describe both the legal and mechanical status of an aircraft with regard to its readiness for flight. |

Altimeter | | An instrument which displays the altitude above mean sea level (MSL) of an aircraft. |

Artificial Horizon | | An instrument which enables a pilot to determine the attitude of the aircraft in relation to the horizon, i.e. whether the aircraft is nose-up, nose-down, or banking left or right. |

Available Seat Mile (ASM) | | One seat flown one mile. An airliner with 100 passenger seats, flown a distance of 100 miles, represents 10,000 available seat miles (ASMs). |

Aviation Trust Fund | | Fund established by Congress to pay for improvements to the nation's airports and air traffic control system. Money in the fund comes solely from users of the system - primarily a tax on domestic airline tickets. |

Air Mile | | A distance of approx. 6076 feet |

Air Travel Card | | A credit card sponsored by the airlines, for the purchase of air travel only |

Airport Transfer | | A transport service to/from an airport to hotel, etc, normally prepaid as part of a package tour, but available separately as well |

Air/Sea | | A term referring to tickets, trips, fares, etc. that include both air and land-based travel arrangements, such as a cruise package with air included |

ASTA | | American Society of Travel Agents - trade group consisting of travel agencies, travel agents, and allied members ( suppliers, etc. ) |

ATO | | Airline Ticket Office - becoming rarer these days, as carriers continue to reduce customer service |

Add-on | | A selection, typically at an increased price, added to a travel reservation. |

Adjoining Rooms | | Bordering hotel rooms that do not share a common door. |
|
Advance Purchase Requirement | | Ticket must be purchased a minimum number of days before the flight departs. |

ARC (Airlines Reporting Corp.) | | The Airlines Reporting Corporation - is responsible for supervising payments from travel agencies to airlines along with the manner in which tickets are issued to consumers. |

Airport Access Fee | | A fee paid to the airport authority by car rental companies for the use of shuttle vehicles. This often appears in customer’s car rental bills. |

Availability | | The total number of seats allowed to be sold at a particular rate. |
