Tips to Keep Children Entertained During Air Travel
Many parents are scared traveling with kids on a plane not knowing how to
keep them busy and entertained. In today’s age and time when air travel
has become commonplace and in many cases not avoidable, it is better to learn
some useful ways to keep the kids engaged while on a flight.
One of the major problems is kids are naturally restless and will not be willing
to sit for long hours. When forced to sit inside an aircraft for a few hours,
they often cry and turn boisterous - much to the embarrassment of their parents.
The best method to travel by air with your kid is to make sure you are prepared
well for your air trip so that you are able to keep your child quiet, entertained
and happy throughout the duration of your air
travel. There are several things
that parents and other accompanying adults can do to manage kids while flying.
- Purchase a number of new and exciting toys, activity books, craft supplies
and crayons. Look for books with interactive qualities, like painting,
coloring, drawing etc.
- Give kids the new toys and activities one by one during the flight so
that the kid’s interest is sustained. Just as they get bored with
one activity, you should spring another surprise and build up the kid’s
expectancy.
- It is common knowledge that craft supplies can effectively help kids
kill time particularly on a long flight. Art projects are truly ideal
for passing time on a flight, but parents should also participate and
involve in the exercise.
- Carry adequate quantities of healthy snacks. Kids can cry and turn noisy
simply because they are hungry. Give them some healthy snacks to quell
their hunger. But never let the child know the quantum of snacks you carry
as they will pester for more and more.
- Most long distance flights also offer exciting kids’ programs
and games on the TV screen in the back of the seat. Make use of these
facilities to keep the kid engrossed and also bring some simple mobile
games if possible.
- Air sickness may pose a threat to some children. Use the air sickness
bags that are available in the aircraft or the diaper bags can also substitute
for air sickness bags. Jet lag is another concern. Parents should gently
adjust the kids’ schedule and let them sleep as much as possible
during the flight.
- Some kids can suffer from ear ache particularly during take-offs and/or
landings. Get toddlers to suck on pacifiers and older kids to sip and
swallow water to relieve the ear pressure. You can also carry soft ear
plugs that equalize the air pressure on each side of the ear drum.
- As it is, tight security measures, passports, baggage check-in, constantly
changing airline rules and regulations are sufficiently frustrating when
choosing to travel by air. Accompanying kids on flights can further add
to the miseries.
Flying with kids is indeed a nightmare for many parents and other escorting
adults. Still, going on long
flights with children is not impossible. You
can certainly manage kids while flying by keeping them entertained on the
plane, feeding them regularly and preparing them for possible air travel
sickness.
