Guidelines To Reduce Your Waiting Time At Airport Security
Most travelers – be they business
travelers or holiday tourists – find
waiting for airport security tedious and frustrating. Nobody enjoys waiting
in long lines but this has today become inescapable. With global terrorism
on the rise, the authorities have further tightened the airport security measures
to even more aggravate the situation.
While conceding that rigid airport security is a compelling need, here are
some useful tips to help you reduce your wait time and get through the security
check clearance procedure as quickly as possible.

- Avoid carrying prohibited items like knives, lighters, firecrackers, matches,
etc to the airport. It is preferable to check the list of prohibited items
as otherwise you will spend time needlessly in line till the items are inspected,
confiscated, and thrown away.
- Place all your valuables such as jewelry, cash, credit cards, undeveloped
film and cameras loaded with film, and even laptop computers as carry baggage
only. You can stick your business card onto your laptop.
- Avoid wearing jewelry, metallic accessories and shoes containing metal
pieces. As you know, any metal item will activate the alarm on the metal
detector. Shoes are considered as highly suspicious items and entails additional
screening even if the metal detector does not alarm.
- If you carry firearms and ammunition, declare them to your airline and
place them in your checked baggage only. If locking your baggage,
use a TSA-recognized lock only.
- Place mobile phones, key bunch, loose change, metal hair
decorations, belt buckles etc in your carry-on baggage or in a plastic bag
prior to reaching the screening checkpoint. Remove your laptop and video
cameras with cassettes out of their cases and place them in a bin provided
at the checkpoint.
- Cell phones, laptops, oversized electronics must be taken
out and put through the X-ray scanner at the security check point. Other
items that will need to be security checked include DVD players, video game
consoles, video cameras etc.
- Lithium batteries are required to be carried only in
carry-on bags and not in your checked luggage. If the lithium batteries
are already in cameras, cell phones, and some laptops, they can be carried
as such.
- Do not carry wrapped gifts but wait until you reach your
destination to wrap them. Wrapped gifts may need to be unwrapped for
security check. This may cause your wait time and those behind
you in the security line to be longer.
- As you enter the airport security line, have your ticket and acceptable
form of ID (passport, driver's license, military ID, government issued ID)
ready so that there is no delay on this account.
- It may also help you to avoid certain traveling times as Monday mornings
are usually known as huge business travel times as also Friday evenings.
In fact, early morning times of all weekdays cause long waiting for airport
security due to heavy passenger rush. It may help you
While using metal detectors were hitherto the norm, many airports are now
using full body scanners (Advanced Imaging Technology) to do the body check
on passengers. If you are uncomfortable with these innovations, you
can ask for less intrusive methods.
