Air Travel Tips Before Beginning Your Journey

You have to bestow attention to quite a few things before embarking on an air journey. It is worth spending some time to learn and understand the air travel tips so that you are better placed when you next plan a long air journey.

Make it a point to gather updated information about all the latest travel advisories and regulations – more so, if you are bound for an international destination guide. Please know the airline industry and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforce some comprehensive rules for travelers and it is necessary you abide by them.

As regards ticketing, the present trend is only to use electronic tickets for travel – for purposes of convenience. But, in the absence of paper tickets, you will need to know all about how to check bags and board the aircraft. Having e-ticket means you will have to provide a reservation number or credit card at check-in. Make sure you have either of the items with you when you arrive at the airport.

Arm yourself with a photo ID as a photo ID will be demanded at the security gate. Remember that in addition to visas/ passports/ ID proof some countries insist on additional documents such as health certificates. To visit some countries, immunizations are necessary prior to travel and in all such cases, carry proof of immunization documents.

With terrorist attacks becoming rampant, it is quite tough to cross the national borders. The passport laws have been made more rigorous making traveling overseas quite cumbersome and complicated. The U.S. government has also revised terms of passport requirements for U.S. travelers booking flights to Canada, Mexico, Panama, Bermuda, and many Caribbean countries.

Next, you must look into the visa requirements of the country you are planning to visit. The best way to check visa requirements is to contact the Embassy of the country you are visiting. In the event a visa is necessary, it is prudent to start your application process early, as it may even take a few weeks to get things done.

You must exercise some extra care about the money you wish to carry.  It is wise to carry the money in different forms - credit cards, traveler’s checks, and cash. In fact, travelers’ checks may be the most secure way to carry money. ATM machines will usually issue local currency to foreign cards. More importantly, think of safe ways to carry money and other travel documents. It is believed by many that money belts are the best place to keep your cash.

You will obviously be having some insurance coverage and if not, check with your credit card company or auto club to know the details of coverage. Some travel insurance plans are comprehensive and include overseas medical coverage as well – apart from personal property and transportation.

Finally, it is wise to carry photocopies of all important documents and store them in a different place than the original – so that you are not seriously handicapped when you misplace the original documents.  Air travel has no doubt changed a lot in recent times and you need to prepare in a big way but you just cannot avoid flying – be it for business or pleasure.
